Geschwader Headquarters moved to Lechfeld, and the newly re-formed II Gruppe to Fusrstenfeldbruck, near Munich. The elements to be employed on night operations went to Munich-Riem. The 1st and 2nd Staffeln of I Gruppe, and the entire III Gruppe, with crews experienced on the He 111 H, stayed for the time being at Landsberg and Memmingen and 3 did not complete conversion to the Ju 88 until the end of May. Before the offensive began, crews of K G 51 had already flown operational missions across the French frontier.
These operations were conducted under orders at Luftflotte level, since no orders had yet emerged from the High Command. Bombing raids in force on the island Kingdom began on July 10th with the aim of drawing British Fighter Command to battle. I l l Gruppe flew only three sorties with its new J u 88 Als, these against targets in the Portsmouth area, which lay hidden under heavy cloud and rain squalls. In occupied France the newly converted crews continued intensive training on their new aircraft.
An uneven whine in the engines suddenly made me prick my ears up. I got such a fright that for a fraction of a second the blood froze in my veins-engines damaged--forced landing-into the bag. These three notions suddenly added up in my mind to a dismal future. I had no time to look at my instruments but had to concentrate completely on the manoeuvres of the lead aircraft, to avoid ramming it. By playing with the throttles I tried to bring the engines to the same revs. No such luck! On and on went this horrible motor whine, coming and going-a noise to make a dead pilot turn in his grave.
