So, today, various strands seem to be converging - from Ecology, from Eastern and Western mysticism, from Jung and the Christianity of Teilhard de Chardin - to create the possibility of a new height of vision, a new level of life where our physical nature will not be cursed as in the Middle Ages, but even more importantly, our spiritual being will not be trampled upon as in the modern era. The most active element of this new spirituality is its concern to extend, to refine, the perceptions of consciousness; a transformation in our understanding of experience in which the arts, with their power to re-awaken imaginative vision, could play a central role.

I would do you little credit, however, if I felt I had caused you to believe I have no real concern for the directions of change. My small convictions, nevertheless, are over-matched by my massive uncertanties. The model I have presented seems to me to embrace those uncertanties and allow us to ponder them. Over the next, say ten, years will schools grow increasingly alike or unalike one another? In what ways will the interpersonal relationships made possible by the schools develop? How will the locality of the school be reflected in its curriculum?
