35 Sir William Rothenstein made a more dramatic claim in his account of the marriage in 1931, continuing to add to the pile of imaginative and salacious speculation. J. Furnivall, who regarded Ruskin as having wickedly endeavoured to trap Effie into adulterous falsehood. ‘There was no pretence of affection,’ Rothenstein wrote, recalling Furnivall’s words, ‘or of sympathy even, betwixt Ruskin and her. ’36 This narrative is confusing. The ‘Italian count’ is not identified, and perhaps Furnivall referred to Effie’s friendship with Charles Paulizzi, an Austrian first lieutenant, on her and Ruskin’s first trip to Venice during the winter of 1849–50.
