It takes time to become a Christian. One is not genuinely converted to Christ overnight. Paul was writing out of his own experience, for it was a full three years after his awakening on the Damascus road when he entered upon his active ministry. The three years probably were spent in a monastic setting near Damascus, where Paul sought to understand the meaning of what had happened to him and the mission to which he was now called.
