By Martin Lindauer (auth.), Prof. Dr. Randolf Menzel, Dr. Alison Mercer (eds.)

At the start of the century, Karl von Frisch inaugurated the experimental research of bee habit along with his reports on shape and colour imaginative and prescient. when you consider that then, experimental research of bee habit has been prolonged to their orientation in house and time, sensory features, and conversation inside a social team. How does a creature with a mind quantity of scarcely one cubic millimeter generate such various and complicated habit? This quantity represents the most recent study at the habit and neurobiology of bees. subject matters contain: dance conversation, foraging and seek habit, selection making, colour imaginative and prescient, studying and reminiscence, constitution and serve as of mind neurons, immunocytological characterization of neuropils and pointed out neurons, and neuropharmacological experiences of stereotyped and realized habit. jointly those papers illustrate the problem that bee habit offers to the neuroethologist in addition to the growth that this box has made lately within the culture of von Frisch's pioneering work.

Viscous Flows. The Practical Use of Theory

Representing a different method of the learn of fluid flows, Viscous Flows demonstrates the application of theoretical suggestions and strategies for reading and predicting fluid move in functional functions. through severely evaluating all correct sessions of theoretical recommendations with experimental information and/or common numerical recommendations, it makes a speciality of the diversity of validity of theoretical expressions instead of on their intrinsic personality.

We end by relating these studies to general observations about the integration of colonies of social insects. INDIVIDUAL-LEVEL VIEW: HOW A BEE RESPONDS TO A PATCH OF FLOWERS The Spectrum of Responses A worker bee shows a wide range of responses to a patch of flowers. These are portrayed in Fig. 1. At one extreme, a forager simply abandons the patch; at the other, she performs repeated, high-tempo trips to the patch combined with vigorous recruitment dances while back at the nest. Between these two extremes of response there is a regular series of intermediate behavior patterns created by foragers grading such behavioral variables as the rate of visits to the patch, the size of their nectar load, and the intensity of their recruitment activity (5, 6, 7,12,17,18,19,24,25,26).

C). Fig. 5 also emphasizes that a bee's response to her particular patch of flowers is tuned to her colony's foraging status, and that a bee can sense her colony's foraging situation through interactions with receiver bees. On this point we have included the speculation that the amount of empty storage space for nectar, like the colony's rate of nectar intake, affects the behavior of receiver bees and so influences a forager's thresholds in patch quality. Actually, this is not pure speculation.
