The term recreational therapy, however, has been accepted by both the ATRA and NTRS to designate treatment-oriented services provided by the discipline (ATRA & NTRS, 1994). Recreation services, on the other hand, delineate the provision of recreation and leisure opportunities and resources for all persons (ATRA & NTRS, 1994) and are distinctly different in nature and process than recreational therapy services.

What is before you is the end result of nearly a two-year effort at putting together the second edition. I must submit that it was a difficult and sometimes exhausting process. I am deeply appreciative of the continual support that Joe Bannon, Susan McKinney of Sagamore Publishing, and others gave to me throughout this process; as it was their belief in the final product that kept things on track. A special thanks is extended to Susan McKinney who has been an incredible person throughout this project.

While today we may expect that all children deserve the right to a free and appropriate education, this was not the case prior to the passage of this dramatic law which mandated education for children with disabilities. In 1976, the profession of therapeutic recreation responded to this new law by submitting language for inclusion in the regulations for implementing this education act. In that one action of response from a profession, therapeutic recreation was included in a major piece of national education legislation.
