It was only after my renunciation, more than thirty years later, when she saw me in my ochre robes, that she would reveal what had transpired long years ago. The years went by, and I was now five. The summer vacation had just started. One day, my parents were at the office while my siblings and I were at home. Rajan and Didi were playing outside but I wasn’t interested in their games. Looking for something else to occupy me, I began browsing through the cupboard in the living room and came upon a stack of comics in the bottom shelf.
I began meditating at every available opportunity even though I had no real guidance or practical understanding of meditation. My method at the time was to sit still and chant ‘Om’. That’s what I did. Whenever I had an hour to spare, I meditated. A subtle change did start to come about. I often found myself at the intersection of time where the lines between the past, present and future blurred. It was like déjà vu but with one difference: I could see what the next moment would hold. Just as a flash of lightning illuminates the dark sky for a moment and you see everything around you in its full glory, these flashes of intuition revealed to me information about the person sitting before me that I simply didn’t know.
He had completely mastered his intuitive faculties. Obviously, I never forgot the date and neither did he. Several years later, I would call him from Australia one day before his date of departure from this world. He was in hospital to undergo a minor surgery. Fit and healthy, he had even played basketball before going into the hospital. We were both sentimental over the phone. ' he asked. 'Yes, why not? ' I was happy to lie and I was happy to believe in that lie. At that moment, how dearly I wished for my own prediction and his intuition to go wrong.
